Scientific Study Says Get Motivated To Increase Your Intelligence!
The BBC has reported that researchers have published a study in The National Academy of Sciences which found that a high IQ score required both high intelligence and high motivation.
However, a low IQ score could be the result of a lack of either intelligence or motivation. The results note that IQ tests are as much a measure of motivation as they are of mental ability.
The findings are derived from a long term study of 250 boys from adolescence to early adulthood and are combined with detailed analysis of previous studies, which showed how material incentives affected the performance of more than 2,000 people in intelligence tests.
Researchers discovered that when individuals are incentivised, their competitive tendencies motivated them to perform to the best of their ability. The result being that their IQ scores are enhanced. This was particularly true for those individuals who previously had lower baseline IQ scores.
What the study reveals in a nutshell is that well motivated or incentivised people’s brains tend to perform better and are sharper in terms of intelligence.
Dr James Thompson, senior honorary lecturer in psychology at University College London, said it had always been known that IQ test results are a combination of innate ability and other variable factors.
Dr Thompson added "Life is an IQ test. A personality test and an IQ result contains elements of both. If an IQ test doesn't motivate someone then that is a good predictor in itself."
What this indicates is that people who are naturally self-motivated are those who are more likely to take a psychometric, personality or IQ test. This in itself predicts for employers that they will be the very candidates who will generally be better motivated – irrespective of the actual results of the tests and albeit they are likely to produce better results.
